The Arizona Air National Guard's 161st Expeditionary Fighter Wing (161EFW) is the largest and oldest fighter wing in the United States Air Force. Established on 1 July 1947 as the 161st Aircraft Control and Warning Wing, it was redesignated as the 161st Fighter Group in 1951 and activated at Sedona Army airfield. The group was reassigned to RAF Mildenhall in England on 1 October 1957 and re-activated there on 20 November 1959 as part of NATO's deterrent force against Soviet aggression. It became part of USAF territory when the U.S. military withdrew from NATO in 1991. In retirement, the unit redeployed to Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, in August 2006 where it operates an Old World Fair type of aircraft known as "The Zephyr". The group also flies a ceremonial Escort Starlight over ceremonies associated with Operation Desert Storm beginning in September 2006. Sedona, Arizona is a city in Sedona County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town has been inhabited by Bannock and Pima Indians for centuries. In 1868, Charles Goodyear established a mining camp on the Pali River about northeast of Sedona to exploit silvermining activity there. In 1876, George A. Smith founded what became known as Goodyear's Station and began selling goods from his store to miners in nearby towns such as Flagstaff and Prescott. By 1890, Goodyear's Station had become one of the largest commercial centers in Arizona with stores including one owned and operated by Harker & Company that sold items ranging from saddles to flour to cigars. In 1912, Sedona was incorporated as a town under the name "Sedona". The first civic building was erected in 1916 at Seventh Street and Park Avenue (now Mohawk Boulevard). At that time Sedona had a population of about 120 people; it grew rapidly during World War II with an influx of refugees from Hiroshima after Japan bombed Nagasaki on August 6th 1945; however, by 1951 only 38 people lived in Sedona total despite its growing population because few businesses could accommodate wartime growth. The following year saw another growth spurt with 3 new businesses being established: First National Bank (1954), Mexican restaurant Chico's (1957), and Fiesta Theatre (1959). Although these early successes were short-lived due to competition from more recent arrivals such as Safeway (1960) or KFC (1964), they served as examples of how community involvement could encourage economic development when done well. In 1961 the University of Arizona came into existence offering a wide range of undergraduate programs while also attracting graduate students who would later contribute To The sedonna renaissance through various fields like law enforcement/enforcement science/technology/informatics etcetera which can still be seen today through many schools that offer degrees here like UA School Of Management
