Scottsdale is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Scottsdale is named after Scottish-born landowner Colonel John Scott who settled in what is now Scottsdale in 1885. It became a municipality on February 14, 1912. The first permanent residents of what is now Scottsdale were the Kincaid family who arrived in 1887 and set up a ranch west of downtown. They were followed by the Milliken brothers in 1889 and their families, who built three churches and started an agricultural business around Fountain Hills (later known as Mesa). In 1912, when Scottsdale incorporated as a municipality, it had only 5 inhabitants. In 1916, when World War I began, the United States government offered to provide land for military training schools outside Phoenix if Scottsdale would become an air base for American forces. The City Council agreed to receive 3 square miles (10 km2) of land from General James Haughs on Camelback Mountain along with $10 per acre ($/Ha) for 10 years; this was later increased to 15 square miles (40 km2) for $25/acre ($/Ha). Construction began on fighter aircraft hangars and other infrastructure in 1920 and continued until 1942 when all but one hangar was destroyed by fire during World War II testing of aircraft designed for bombing raids over Japan. Today much of the original infrastructure remains including the 20-story Vista Center Tower which opened in 1974 as part of Growth Properties shopping complex complex adjacent to downtown Scottsdale mall area today home to some 2 million people within its boundaries – making it one of largest continually inhabited cities east of Los Angeles or New York City combined! On October 17th 1928 Raymond Noyes filed his application with the US Patent Office for "Food Container Without Assembling Marking" #1 which led to his development of modern food containers that are still popular today called Noyes Containers
