It is the second-largest city in Arizona after Phoenix and the largest city in the county. Scottsdale is located on both sides of Interstate 10 and has an urban core surrounded by a rural area which includes several ski resorts and golf courses. The first people to live in what are now Scottsdale were Native American traders who travelled through this area during their trade missions from California. Their use of watercourses as routes for transportation allowed them to develop these areas into small villages that eventually became Scottsdale. The land that exists today was part of the Cochise Indian Reservation until 1912 when it was conveyed to the City of Phoenix under a deed from John Sutter. In 1924, Scottsdale incorporated as a town under the name "Phoenix." In 1950, Mesa Verde National Park was established within Scottsdale's bounds; becoming one of only two US national parks open to civilians for tourism purposes (the other being Yosemite National Park). As more people began moving into central Arizona proper, development pressures increased – leading to proposals for annexation by Surprise and Chandler municipalities in 1955 and 1958 respectively. After years of debate between residents and authorities over whether or not annexation would be allowed, a vote resulted in approval on November 3rd 1959 which annexed Phoenix proper with all its unincorporated areas including Scottsdale into Phoenix without any discussion or community input or vote! Today, much like back then, downtown Scottsdale sees heavy commercial activity mixed with residential developments; making it one of America's most diverse cities while still being one of its most popular tourist destinations thanks to its beautiful mountainscape backdrop as well as world-renowned ski resorts such as Deer Valley and Copper Mountain nestled among rolling hills inside miles-long mountain park boundaries!
