In 1907, an Italian immigrant named Antonio Zanardi opened Zanardi Coffee House in northeast Scottsdale. The business was initially just a small grocery store and espresso bar, but it soon became one of the city's mainstay spots for morning java. In 1949, Zanardi's son-in-law purchased the business and continued to run it as Zanardi Coffee Company until his death in 1984. The first Starbucks shop opened up in downtown Scottsdale in 1994. The chain quickly grew into one of Arizona's leading coffee retailers, selling both beans and drinks from its stores across the state. Today, Starbucks has more than 2,000 locations worldwide and operates over 100 cafeterias around the world (including a presence in Scottsdale). One of Starbucks' most notable contributions to Arizona is their dedication to sourcing only premium Arabica beans from local farms in order to provide customers with high-quality coffee products that are sustainable and ethically responsible. The Origins of Coffee: A Timeline As with any other product or service, coffee started out as something quite simple. The bushes from which beans were harvested were simply dried up and then chopped into small pieces. This was all before humans had any understanding of how to roast beans correctly! (Although pretty much everything else about coffee started out this way!) Eventually, people began to develop more refined methods of roasting beans. And so the story goes, one day a man named Pekin spotted an abandoned lot full of dry roasted beans. He took them home and began to roast them himself –imbuing them with his own unique flavor profile! This led to the first true form of espresso (and incidentally also helped kickstart the Italian Coffee Renaissance!).)
