San Luis is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 3,591 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the San Joaquin River and its ZIP Code 85734 is within Maricopa County. A post office was established at San Luis in 1875; it remained operational until 1907. The town site consisted of about 150 acres (61 hectares). In 1902, Mayor Manuel Chavez donated 640 acres (250 hectares) east of the river to establish what would become San Luis Park; it became a municipio in 1912. In 1916, when Pima County was created from parts of five other counties, San Luis became one of its seven townships. The population peaked at 4,856 in 1940; it declined to 3,591 as of 2010. The economy consists largely of agriculture: cattle and sheep farming are major activities; but there are also some manufacturing enterprises such as oil production and garment manufacture. The residents of Nogales formed a citizens’ committee to help raise money for school construction starting in 1917; this effort resulted in the establishment of Anaconda High School on December 3rd that same year vacated by Scottsdale High School which had opened four months earlier that fall due to local racial violence related to Proposition 8 (the "Mexican American Defense Act").
