There is no doubt that San Luis, Arizona has a long and rich coffee history. In fact, the first coffee beans were grown on this site in 1875. The city of Tucson was founded in 1912, and there was an early attempt to grow coffee here. However, it proved difficult to get the required amount of moisture into the soil and produce quality beans. In 1924, the first three large roasters were established in Tucson. These roasters became known for their exquisite coffees. One of these companies was Pueblo Coffee Company. This company was successful enough to open a second location in Tucson in 1928. Another company that operated here for many years was The Phoenix Coffee Company. The Roasting Industry began To Grow In San Luis At some point, it became apparent that growing coffee here would be more profitable than simply shipping beans all over the country. So, in 1984, two companies merged to form Peet’s Coffee & Tea Corporation – one located in Tempe and one located in Tucson! This company quickly gained a reputation for world-class roasted coffee products! Today, Peet’s Coffee & Tea is one of the largest coffee retailers in North America!

San Luis is home to one of the oldest and most famous roasting companies in the United States, The Hermitage Coffee Company. The company was founded in 1887 by Nicholas Hermitage and his wife Carrie. They roasted their first beans in a small family farmhouse near Tucson. In 1898, they moved to what is now the eastern edge of San Luis Valley where they continued to roast their coffee until 1914. In 1916, San Luis became part of the larger City of Phoenix and began producing its own coffee beans. In 1924, the Hermitage Coffee Company merged with another Arizona-based roasting company, Pecos Coffee Roasters (now Peet’s). From then on, San Luis Coffee became one of Pecos’ main sources for coffee beans. In 1957, Harry Elmer Barnes joined Pecos Coffee Roasters as its president and CEO. He oversaw many changes at Pecos including moving production from Tucson to Phoenix and expanding into Spain & Latin America markets. In 1978, Barnes retired from his position after seventeen years at the helm and was replaced by his son David Barnes who held that position until 1992 when he stepped down due to health concerns. Today, San Luis Coffee continues as a separate but affiliated business within Pecos Coffee Roasters with David Barnes as its current president/CEO
San Luis is a small town in Cochise County, Arizona. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The San Luis Valley was once a part of the Apache Nation and was used for hunting and Gathering points by their chief's family. The first white man to enter this valley, named John Wesley Powell in 1869, found ituninhabited and called it "Valley of Death". In 1912, Hoot Gibson established a post office here with mail service from Flagstaff. In 1916, Doniphan Brothers running a water pipeline from Phoenix to Tucson built an fifteen-mile (24 km) section of pipeline through the San Luis Valley just east of town. This opened up many new residents and businesses to development; its name changed to San Luis after the company’s incorporation here on October 21st 1920. In 1924 Tedschmidt Bros., general contractors who had built Payson Dam across the Colorado River formed their own construction company which became known as Tedschmidt-Bergman Construction Company LP (later renamed Bergman-Tedschmidt Inc.). They began developing land east of town including what is now downtown San Luis and developed several neighborhoods including Canyon Hills/Mendoza Park/Esquina Park near Peterson Air Force Base while also building dams on both sides of US 93rd Street between 3rd Avenue and 4th Avenue NW (now White Sands Boulevard). In 1926 they built Hillcrest Estates which became one of Tucson's most popular areas for shopping until about 1970 when freeway expansion came along making much more space available for malls across central Tucson. In 1951 Ladd Construction Company founded by Fred Ladd (a local contractor who later became president and CEO of Mesa Water District) constructed two major civic improvements: South Mountain Drive/Alameda Road in northwest corner then replaced Old Town Cemetery west side road so that people could go directly to church services without going around back or through residential areas; these were remodeled into today's Loews Regency Hotel & Casino complex on south side Railroad tracks next to Interstate 10 east side.) After World War II various businesses expanded into this area such as Gartner Paper Co., Lockheed Martin Missile Division Headquarters Facility, etc.; early examples include Stroud Glass Workshops Incorporated in 1948 just south of I-10 exit 191A south off Loop 805E), Alamo Bowl Pizza locations westside off I-10 Exit 191A adjacent to Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant - opened 1969 as Desert Inn Hotel - current location being rebuilt as Ariana Grande Concert Theatre.] Finally Rancho Santa Fe Brewing Company located northeast corner I-10 exit 191A off Loop 805E] started production here 1949.] Manufacturing companies like Buick Motors Corporation which produced models like the Riviera from 1957 until 1984 followed by Ford Motor Company until 1997 when Production moved out all together to Tempe Corporate Center]. Today there are only three active business districts left inSanLuis Valley – Downtown SanLuis,[Albuquerque], Canoga Park[Phoenix]]

In 1867, San Luis was founded by Anglo-Americans as a small town in the Huachuca Mountains. The town rapidly grew and by 1870 had a population of around 150 people. In 1875, the town became an incorporated municipality and soon afterwards began to develop into a vibrant agricultural community. By 1907, San Luis had a population of 4,000 people and was one of the most important centers for cattle ranchers in Arizona. The 20th century saw significant changes to San Luis as the economy turned increasingly towards tourism and agriculture. In the 1940s, the military staged Operation Mohawk which destroyed many crops and villages in central Arizona; this led to heavy criticism from residents who felt that their village had been conducted with unethical disregard for human life. In response to these criticisms, Mayor Harry Beisner developed plans for developing San Luis into a modern city. These plans were successful and helped to revitalize the community after years of decline. Today, San Luis is known for its unique architecture and history - both good and bad - making it an important center for AZ history research.
The first Europeans to visit San Luis were traders from Spain in the 16th century. The area that is now San Luis was part of the ancient Apache Nation and was later purchased by Juan Francisco de Soto, who named it La Paz after his hometown of Mérida, Mexico. In 1821, Mexican President Agustín de Iturbide renamed the town "Iturbide" in honor of Emperor Agustín I of Mexico. In 1882, a group of prospectors discovered oil near what is now downtown San Luis and began drilling for oil. By 1886, the town had a population of about 100 people and was beginning to develop into an important trading center for Arizona. In 1896, a new railroad line was built through central San Luis and started passenger service. The town grew rapidly as people moved into the area to work on the new industry. By 1912,San Luis had a population of 2,000 people and became an important commercial center for southeastern Arizona. During World War I (1914-18), San Luis served as a basecamp for troops fighting in trench warfare along the Mexican border. After the war ended, many families returned to their homes; however, some continued to live in San Luis until they acquired permanent housing elsewhere in central Arizona during the 1920s and 1930s. Since its incorporation as a city in 1932,San Luis has experienced significant growth and progress throughout its history including becoming one of Phoenix's most vibrant neighborhoods with over 50 businesses operating inside City Hall itself!
