The San Luis Coast Guard Station was established in 1912. The station is located on the east bank of the river Pecos, about 8 miles south of downtown San Luis. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station became a ranger post and then a staffed base for the National Park Service. The Coast Guard Station is now used as a research center for coastal communities across the country. It has been home to many different types of research, from oceanography to atmospheric science. In 1984, Congress designated portions of Santa Barbara County as an area rich in marine life and history and called for the creation of a coast guard station in that area. The station was built on land donated by Mrs. Evelyn Alvarado, who had been instrumental in helping to create Santa Barbara County when it was first organized as part of California. Today, the San Luis Coast Guard Station is one of only a few ranger posts left in Arizona that still uses traditional methods such as live fire training exercises and patrols along the coastline to protect our natural resources.

The name "San Luis" means "place of milk and honey." There are three large dairy farms in town: one belonging to Bell Dairy and two belonging to Alaron Dairy. In addition to these dairy farms there are several smaller businesses that provide milk for local markets and restaurants. The economy of San Luis is primarily based on agriculture with a few small manufacturing businesses also present.

In 1912, the city of San Luis was founded on the east bank of the Salt River near present-day Phoenix. The name came from a Mexican battle in 1846 where local Apache Indian warriors fought against American forces.
