The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Sahuarita, Arizona in 1939. The gift was a A-4C Skyhawk fighter plane. This plane was donated by Lt. Col. Harry Haldeman and crew of the USS Lexington during World War II. The plane remained in the USAF until 1988 when it was retired and given to the Sahuarita Museum of History & Art as a display piece. In 2013, the museum decided to keep the airplane and donate it back to the USAF as part of their exhibit on air force deployments throughout history.

In 1867, postmaster George Armstrong sent a letter to the editor of the Arizona Miner asking for suggestions on a new name for the community. He suggested Sahuarita because of its beauty and its location near Tempe. When newspapers started publishing photographs of Sahuarita, they also called it Tempe because that was where many people were living when the community was founded.

The town was originally established on the edge of a desert and was known for its harsh climate and lack of resources. However, over time, Sahuarita has developed into a successful community with a rich history. The first settlers to arrive in Sahuarita were Spanish Conquistadors who set up camp along the banks of the Gila River in 1868. After several years of hard work, they had built a cabin and started harvesting some of the local red huckleberries. This soon became their primary source of income. In 1870, an irrigation system was constructed that allowed them to grow crops and build their own homes. By 1880, Sahuaritans had established themselves as well-off citizens who enjoyed good health and prosperity from their country's natural resources. However, during World War I (1914-1918), life in Sahuarita changed drastically due to hostilities between America and Europe. Many people left for military service or other reasons; however, many others remained behind because they could not find another job or because they didn't want to leave their families behind.
