The first units of the Prescott National Guard were organized as a horse cavalry unit called "Arizona Cavalry" on September 26, 1912. On October 10, 1912, the 1st Cavalry Regiment was activated at Camp Verde north of Tucson by Colonel John Lorette and Lieutenant Colonel Wm Halsey Fenton. In 1915, when World War I started, President Woodrow Wilson authorized the activation of 3rd Infantry Regiment at Winslow Field east of Phoenix to provide guards for military installations within 12 miles of town centers across America. In 1916 American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) landed at Anzio during World War I and soon after LtCol Augustus Cushing was assigned to Headquarters Company AEF 5th Infantry Division as adjutant general for all infantry divisions which had arrived in Italy since 1915-16 as part of General Pershing's American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). General Pershing's order No 3 dated December 9 1916 read: "It is my intention to organize Provisional Government hereunder; all necessary steps will be taken to effect this." This order designated LtCol Augustus Cushing as acting commanding general First Infantry Division until it could be properly constituted with MajGen Edward House as its first commander effective January 1 1917. On December 14 1916 Col Leroy Sweetman became commandant Second Battalion 2nd Arizona Infantry Regiment under MajGen House at Camp McDowell near Phoenix while Col Theodore Roosevelt served temporarily with First Infantry Division commanded by Major General Leonard Woodlock from November 25 1917 until his promotion to lieutenant general on December 16 1917 made him permanent Commanding General United States Army Military District Southwest Pacific Area including Australian Islands Territory which included New Guinea and Samoa." Captain George Weiser became second battalion Commandernafter coming aboard from Third Battalion stationed at Fort Sill Oklahoma Territory Militia Artillery Landing Force also under MajGen House when UDT came ashoreNovember 25 1917 until he promotion to captain on December 16 1917 made him permanent Commander United States Army Military District Southwest Pacific Area including Australian Islands Territory which includes New Guinea and Samoa." After World War II ended most units returned home except for one battalion stationed at Ft Sam Houston Texas during reconstruction period 1946-49 before being reorganized again 1959-65 into 4 battalions deploying permanently throughout continental US before being discontinued 1966-70 but some elements remain today (1st Battalion AZ State Troopers).
