The population of Prescott Valley was 9,723 as of the 2010 census. It is a farming community with extensive vineyards and wineries. The valley has several settlement sites from the prehistoric period including Hayden Place about 8 miles northeast of Prescott and Pinnacle Hill about 12 miles southeast of Prescott. The first Europeans to visit Prescott Valley were traders from Spain who started trading goods with Indian tribes in what is now New Mexico in 1542-43. In 1764-65 George Washington surveyed this area as part of his land grant to Juan de la Hoz. In 1867 General John Blythe organized five companies for mining in what are now various parts of Arizona Territory including Prescott Valley which he named after his friend James Kirtland Prescott who had been instrumental in organizing the territorial government whilealdepting (an early Navajo term meaning "to travel"). This exploration led to development of Tucson, Ariz., as well as other towns withinArizona Territory during this time period including Window Rock near Scottsdale and Peoria on upper Peoria River where mining operations began approximately 1868 at an early location known as Gold Rush Gulch. Meanwhile back east, developers were beginning to developPhoenix into its current form around 1885 when they purchased land comprising most or all of modern Phoenix from Drury Whipple for $1 million dollars becoming one of America's largest real estate listings at that time. By 1905 there were over 1,000 people living in Phoenix proper with some 2200 residents residing outside its boundaries along Central Avenue which ran through downtown Phoenix then called Plano until it was renamed Royale Street following city annexation later that year). At about this same time developers also began developing Prescott Valley under new names such as Gassawaye (now Hayden Place) and Hiwassee (now Pinnacle Hill) following surveys conducted by Jepson Brothers Surveyors Company Limited which included excellent views northward across Kingman Canyon toward Mesa Verde National Park while also surveying today's roads running through these areas making them easy access points for prospectors seeking strikes during this era characterized by abundant gold fields throughout much of central Arizona but especially near Globe City on Mohawk Creek approximately 10 miles northwest cornerof present day Anthem Township near Interstate 10 en route between Tempe and Phoenix). What followed during these years was an intense gold rush characterized by large scale excavation starting immediately prior to1900 resulting in massive placer ore being beneficiated yielding annual output up until 1906 estimated at over 5 million pounds although today only a fraction remains recoverable from surface rights claims covering an area extending nearly 6 square miles making it one of America's most significant remaining gold rushes particularly notable given its remote location relative both geographically speaking yet also historically significant given that prior thereto substantial portions both upstream and downstream adjacent primarily Tooele County bottoms where significant quantities still remain ungilded promising further widespread production potential once additional infrastructure/purchase opportunities become available). remnants remaining today include: Placer Deposits: 31969 acres; Sulfur Deposit: 351 acres; Gold Mines: 307 ounces per tonne; Silver Mines: 2 ounces per tonne; Copper Mines: 1 ounce per pound silver & 0.0002 pennyweights fine silver mined since 1946); Coal Mines: Unknown quantity
