Peoria is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The population was 153,547 at the 2010 census. Peoria is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Peoria has been called "the bread and butter of Phoenix" because of its importance in the food industry. The city's economy is based on manufacturing and service industries. The first Europeans to sight what would become Peoria were Spanish conquistadors on their way from Mexico City to exploration of the region in 1542–43. They named it San Francisco de los Pinos after Mount San Francisco, about 17 miles (27 km) west of present-day Peoria. A Mexican land grant was awarded by Governor Manuel Filomena Alvarado to Oliver Cowdery in 1821 as part of Treaty 7 between Mexico and United States following the Gadsden Purchase. In 1824, General Antonio López Adobe gave land for a town site on the south bank of the Salt River near its confluence with Osage Creek, east of today's downtown business district. In 1846 when Tucson became a territory under US jurisdiction following Apache Wars fought between US forces and Apache Indians northwest of Tucson, some residents elected to move their businesses and residences eastward into what is now Phoenix so they could benefit from heavy military spending there during that conflict; this movement became known as "theadanization". The first Europeans to visit what is now Peoria were Spanish traders and missionaries who came to trade goods with the Apache and Pima Indians in 1602. After some years of exploration they arrived at what would become Peoria on November 7, 1610 by way of present day Buckeye Road. Jesuit Father Francisco Xavier Menéndez de Avila was traveling from Mexico City when he reached Tucson on October 8, 1611; he visited Peoria next on his trip northward towards Prescott Valley before returning to Mexico City on October 15th. In 1859, during Mexican–American War efforts by General Tomás Sánchez y Gómez to gain control over Apache lands east of Tucson saw several skirmishes between American forces under Ulysses S Grant and Mexican troops around Peoria; these skirmishes are generally considered as part of the Battle of Yuma which occurred on February 14th and resulted in heavy losses for both sides involved with General Sánchez’s attempt to retake Apache land east of Tucson from Private Andrew Jciplin’s 1st Infantry Regiment Company while under command OFFCE ( Later 2nd Battalion Arizonan Volunteers) pending orders from President James Buchanan that no Indian war should take place within US borders without specific congressional approval On July 20th 1861 Mormon pioneers led by George Waddy journeyed down Buckeye Road from Verde Canyon near present day Phoenix into central Maricopa County following an invitation extended by Governor John Woolley after searching for a route into Salt Lake Valley less traveled than either Buckeye Road or Main Street leading west out of Phoenix .
