Payson, Arizona is an unincorporated community in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It lies northeast of Tucson and east of Phoenix. The name "Payson" is derived from the Apache word "pañon." The first settlers in what is now Payson were Mexican-American ranchers who arrived in 1859. They named their new land Ciudad de Oro (City of Gold). In 1912, when Pima County was organized, the local residents decided to change the name to honor John C. Fremont who had been governor of Arizona during Reconstruction. In 1937, a group of developers led by Jerald Hughes bought 640 acres (248 hectares) around present-day Payson and began building what would become known as the Hughes Ranch subdivision. The community's first store opened in 1938 on US 90/92 north of town; it was operated by Wm. Hickey & Son grocery stores until 1948 when they sold out to Ladd & Company meat merchants who built a larger store on current day Main Street which still operates today as Ladd's Store features a museum about early Pioneers and their descendants

Payson, Arizona is a town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town was founded by John Wesley Payson in 1907 as a sheep and cattle station on the Mohave River. The name may be derived from the word "pardner" (a white man), meaning "cattleman." In 1912, Payson acquired an interest in a ranch south of Tucson called Apache Peak Ranch which soon became one of the most important parcels in Phoenix's history. In 1916, Payson married Olga Atherton and together they started homesteading on Apache Peak Ranch. They had six children: Gladys (1916-2009), John Wesley (b 1936), Douglas (1918-2007), Barbara Jane (b 1945), and Melody Lynn (b 1951). In 1922 they bought Mesa Verde Ranch which included much of what is now Phoenix suburb Mesa Verde Park. In 1949, when Harry Chandler bought Mesa Verde from his father for nearly $2 million, he decided to make it into a city with services such as water mains and electricity available to all residents within its limits; however, Chandler never carried out his plan because he could not afford it financially. Chandler instead erected two high schools and built several other buildings including a hospital that still stands today: Oneonta Hospital School District #1 building adjacent to Valley Life Insurance Company Building has been designated as Arizona State Historical Landmark number 76030
