The first cannon were brought over by wagon train from New Mexico in 1886. The USMILC had one artillery piece at camp until it was replaced by an American cannon in 1888 after being captured by the Apache Indians during their war against General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s MexicanArmy. A second artillery piece arrived soon afterwards but it was destroyed during an accident while being transported across country In 1905, when Tucson became a city, there were several requests for cannons to be brought over so that they could be used against criminals or anarchists who frequented downtown areas. Unfortunately, because these cannons were not Loaded with explosives like modern weapons, they proved too volatile and dangerous to use without causing extensive damage or injuries to bystanders. The following year saw the arrival of Captain John Davenport, who began developing what would become the town's largest land grant; it included 1,500 acres (5 km2) of land at present-day Payson Heights. By 1872, Captain Davenport had also founded a school and Presbyterian church in town which quickly became one of the most popular places to live in Payson due to its lax regulations on alcohol sales and gambling). In 1875, Captain Davenport sold his land grant to General John Bodeen for $10,000 cash - making him one of the wealthiest men in Arizona at that time. Over time, General Bodeen developed a strong interest in farming throughout central Arizona and started leasing out portions of his grant for cultivation; this led to increased profits for him as well as helped foundation many small businesses within Payson over time. In 1885 local entrepreneur John Waddell opened up another business - A & W Emporium - which quickly became known as one of Prescott's leading retail outlets (). By 1886(), Waddell had also built two larger stores - The grocery store at 201 N 4th Street () and The distillery store at 318 E Main Street (). These two stores were quickly followed by others: Singer Brothers Grocery Store (); Beaumont Hardware (); Chilton Boot Shop (); Duncan Tire & Service (); First National Bank (); Masonic Lodge No 8A (); Post Office ().
