In 1912, a new school was constructed to serve the community. Payson experienced its heyday during World War I when more than 2,000 soldiers from nearby Tucson served in France. Nearby businesses made donations of goods and money to support their troops. After the war ended, many of these businesses closed down or were sold off due to economic decline. However, some continue to operate today including a bank, hardware store and restaurant. In recent years, Payson has been experiencing growth with new development being erected along both side streets as well as within the town itself. One such project is the construction of a $10 million park that will include a golf course and other recreational amenities. This redevelopment has created significant new employment opportunities for locals as well as providing much needed fresh air into an otherwise humid area.
