Payson, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. It has been inhabited by the Hohokam people for over 10,000 years. In 1868, Payson was founded by George W. Park and his wife Anna Maria Donelson. The first store in Payson was called the Donelson Mercantile Company and it was open from 1865 to 1867. By 1870, there were six stores in Payson and one grocery store. The population of Payson grew from 581 in 1880 to 3,827 by 1910. The first coffee beans were grown in Payson in 1886 by John Cramer and Jens Sorensen. They bought a piece of land on which to plant coffee bushes and began harvesting beans soon after. By 1890, there were ten coffee plantations in the area producing around two million pounds of coffee each year. The export of coffee continued until 1949 when the US Stevenson- Hearst Corporation decided to stop selling its products overseas due to World War II restrictions on exports of Axis materials

The first settler in Payson was George Atherton, who arrived in 1867. He named his land "Payson" after his brother-in-law, James Payson, who had come toArizona the year before from Massachusetts. In 1887, Daniel Ewing bought land east of Payson and founded the city of Phoenix on what is now Central Avenue and Washington Street. In 1912 Gertrude Aldrich donated 5 acres (20 ha) of her property north of central Phoenix to the city for cultural purposes only. This area became known as Aldrich Park today. A group of entrepreneurs came to Payson in 1922 and began developing what would become known as the "Gateway Country" around US 66/I-10 and SR 250/SR 502 within walking distance of their homes on Morenci Road near Indian School Road. These pioneers were Clarence Kingman, Harry Chandler and Earle Ellis; they developed some 135 businesses that together generated $2 million in sales during their heyday between 1924 and 1951. In 1938 Gilbert Cates opened up his store at Fourth Street and Camelback Rd., which has been continuous operating since 1938 with no major changes other than occasional updates to stock or menu items - except for an addition of fresh produce starting in 1978 when local farmer Art Bueno opened Casa de Cuervo Farmers Market on East McDowell Drive adjacent to Gilbert's store). From 1938 until its closure by JCPenney as a department store circa 1987 all stores operated under one roof at One Fifth Street & Camelback Rd.; however due to various factors including fire concerns over time this closedtered location has experienced sporadic vandalism over time [the last straw being a damage done when someone cut through Plexiglas flooring that left extensive evidence]. Today remnants can be found scattered about across many blocks surrounding One FifthStreet & Camelback Rd., most notably along East University Dr., serving as an interesting local tourist attraction although much caution must be exercised while visiting as there have been several reported thefts recently!
