Payson, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 3,902 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Apache chief named Pashon. According to local legend, when Apache chief Cochise died, his body was buried near what is now Payson. After many years of searching by settlers and Native Americans, some believe that part of Cochise's skeleton still remains buried there today. In 1881, land around present-day Payson was granted to John Sutter by President James K. Polk as part of the Gadsden Purchase. The land included parts of modern-day Phoenix and Prescott. As part of the deal, Sutter offered $10 per acre for any Indian who might live on or near the land he had acquired. In 1885, Jepson Brothers founded a flour mill in present-day Payson with help from Waddell & Co., a company organized by John Sutter to purchase land adjoining his Gadsden Purchase lands west of Phoenix for irrigation purposes. By 1888, about 100 residents lived in what is now Payson after settler George Bowen added an adobe house and corral to his farmstead on the riverbank east of downtown (now known as Goodyear Street). One year later, Waddell & Co.'s water power brought about first electricity to residents in their homes and mills along Goodyear Creek before it reached Prescott via telephone line in 1890; this event helped spur development northward towards Prescott during that era." In 1911–12 Anthony Construction Company built one of America's largest concrete plants at what is now Mohave Dam Road and University Drive—this enterprise led to increased employment opportunities within southeastern Arizona during World War I because new acres were available for agricultural production; accordingly, many families moved into adjacent townships such as Beaumont and Surprise while others established citrus crops such as oranges or apples inside older ranching areas outside town limits."
