Payson, Arizona is a small town in the Apache County district of Arizona. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Phoenix and north of Tucson. The first Europeans to visit Payson were Spanish missionaries in 1795. In 1828, Payson was part of the Mexican state of Sonora. When Arizona became part of the United States in 1912, Payson remained a part of Apache County until 1959 when it joined Navajo County. Payson is named after General George Saylor who commanded Ulysses S. Grant's army during the American Civil War and later served as a US Senator from New Mexico Territory from 1865 to 1868. He lost his life while leading an advance party on July 15th, 1865 at Little Colorado River Bridge over which Santa Fe Road crossed into Apache County from New Mexico Territory before continuing their journey upriver for supplies back to Fort Sumner on July 16th; less than two weeks after Grant's funeral service was held in Phoenix memorializing him as "the lamented general". The post office opened in 1881 and closed in 1951; it reopened under new management in 1957 and has been open continuously since then. The first store opened near what is now known as West Main Street; today that business still operates as a convenience store and gas station called All-Star Convenience Store & GAS Station #1 (formerly Empire Supermarket). Payson, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, and is the only incorporated community in the county. The population was 1,511 at the 2010 census. It lies about 26 miles south of Tucson on Interstate 10 and has a total area of just 2 square miles. The first people to live in what is now Payson were Caddo and Apache Indians who arrived here during the 1820s. They left behind their cultures and many artifacts which remain today including an Adobe Walls house built around 1800. In 1864, Payson was founded by soldiers from Fort Sumner when they abandoned their march through Arizona to join General Joseph Eaddy's forces besieging Phoenix. The men built a stockade around present-day Payson on the convergence of two streams and named it Fort Sumner after General Eaddy's headquarters at that time. The fort served as a Supply depot for Grant's army during its campaign against Confederate forces in 1865-1866. When hostilities ended, the fort was abandoned and used as a cattle ranch until it was taken over by local ranchers in 1923. In 1924 it became part of the newly created municipality of Benson when Benson was organized from parts of Cochise County north of Tucson. In 1951, Payson had an influx of immigrants when construction began on Interstate 10 near Benson on what would become known as "the Indian Road." Nearly 1,000 people interested in farming went to work building roads and bridges across this remote stretch of desert country that would soon be home to one million people living within its boundaries—more than any other U.S.-drawn lineal community between Tucson and points eastward! As Exhibit A in this massive growth process were three churches founded here: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1887), Second Presbyterian Church (founded 1927) and African Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1954). These structures remain among our most iconic symbols – witness to history mixed with modern day culture! Payson also experienced some real changes during its early years; such as becoming home to one of America’s first school districts (1893), store towns for farmers growing cotton (1907), prohibition era housing developments (1922-1928) – all while still maintaining close ties with nearby Cochise County! Today we continue this proud tradition by hosting annual Flag Day events at both our churches which include parades down Constitution Avenue followed by open houses for residents/visitors!
