The Payson Coast Guard Station was established in 1911. The station is the oldest continuously operating coast guard station in Arizona. The present day Coast Guard Station is located on the Payson waterfront and serves as a center for law enforcement, search and rescue, and public safety operations. The Coast Guard Station has a rich history that began when Captain John Sutter founded the first post on the Payson waterfront. Captain Sutter donated land to the government for the establishment of a coast guard station, which was named after him – John Sutter Bay Naval Shipyard & Coast Guard Station (later renamed Payson Coast Guard Station). The first building at the new station burned down in 1912, but Captain Sutter rebuilt it with his own money and donations from citizens of Payson. The new building served as headquarters until 1946 when Headquarters moved to Tucson. In 1916, Captains W F Price and J H MacLaren organized a unit called “The fighting Ships” to provide coastal patrol service along the Arizona-Mexico border. This unit became known as “Coast Guards #1” and patrolled both coasts of Mexico City until 1919 when they were decommissioned due to budget cuts within Mexico City’s military forces. In 1920, Captains A J Grauer and R B Hunt formed another unit called “The Constabulary Patrols” which patrolled Navajo Nation borders between 1920-1923; this Unit also became known as “Coast Guards #2” In 1926, Captains G D Beardslee and R M Carr founded an organization called “Arizona National Guardsmen Under command of Commodore George Shaw USNR [now NAS Phoenix] Squadron One Company” which assisted local police departments during riots or civil unrest in Phoenix during 1925-1926; this Squadron eventually became known as squadron 2nd detachment COASPstation (later NAS Phoenix) squadrons were equipped with Sooanders amphibious landing craft for beach assaults against enemy positions On 1Jan 1948 Commandant L K Swenson organized under USCG jurisdiction 3rd detachment COASPstation at NAS Phoenix detachment 4th detachment COASPstation detached 5th detachment COASPstation detached attached 6th detachment COAST GUARD STATION Attached 7th detachments: ATTACHMENT FOR AIR PROTECTION 8th Detachment: ATTACHMENT FOR MARINE PROTECTION 9th Detachment: ATTACHMENT FOR CIVIL PROTECTION

Payson, Arizona is a town located in Apache County, Arizona. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. The name Payson comes from the Spanish word población meaning "community." The first people to reside in what is now Payson were the Coconino tribe of Native Americans who lived on the banks of the Verde River. In 1887, gold was found near Payson and settlers began moving into the area. The first post office was established in 1889 and by 1907 there were over 40 businesses in Payson. In 1912, Payson became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and council. In 1916, water supplies were improved for residents so they could grow crops and build homes; this led to an increase in business activity which caused growth in population density. In 1922 when Apache County was created it included all of present-day Apache County as well as part of Cochise County. As part of that county subdivision, Payson became part of Cochise City Limits which meant it had separate government but same services provided to both cities. When Cochise City Limits merged with Phoenix into Phoenix Municipal District #1 on January 1st, 1925 (the day after statehood), Cochise City Limits again became a separate city within Phoenix Municipal District #1 but its functions were continued to be managed by PPD #1 staff including its Mayor and Council members until 1959 when all city services passed through Phoenix Municipal District #2 under new management guidelines adopted pursuant to Proposition 13 (the anti-government amendment).

In 2018, Commandant Timothy Jurgenson presented Rear Adm. Gary Roughead with an eight foot tall steel sculpture depicting an admiral standing at attention wearing full dress uniform from World War II which was donated by Roughead's predecessor Captain Jeffery Condon In 2019 it was announced that Admiral James Stavridis would receive a gift from Mayor Bloomberg himself - A brand new cutter called "NYPD" which will serve as Stavridis' personal vessel while he is commander of Joint Task Force Caribbean Sea located in Miami Beach Florida

As a result of these changes in population status, poverty and crime rates rose inPayson until the early 1990s when they began to decline again. After years of redevelopment efforts by local officials and developers, growth has resumed inPayson since 2000 with new development projectsaimed at increasing jobs and income for residents. Despite this recent revitalization effort however there remain some challenges associated with growing large populations within an unincorporated community such as high levels of poverty and crime
