The east side of Payson is home to the old Cholla Mission and today's Eagleton Hills shopping center while the west side has more retail options with a focus on agriculture. In addition to its downtown core, Payson also has several small villages near it including Cherry Valley, Eagleton Hills, Glasson and Park City. In 1875 Gilbert Hayden prospected for gold in what is now northeast Payson and he named his discovery "Galloway" after General Arthur Galloway who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Hayden then sold rights to other prospectors and this led to development around "Galloway" which included an adobe courthouse and schoolhouse that still stand today as well as several homesites built by early settlers such as James Ahern (1859-1939), Amasa Walker (baptized 1857) and John O'Brien (1863-1921). In 1906 Elisha Satterwhite bought land east of "Galloway" from Hayden did some farming before transferring ownership in 1916 to his son Amos Satterwhite Jr. who continued operations until his death in 1948. When World War II began many businesses closed due to shortages of food but when resources improved many reopened but grew smaller again over time due to competition from larger regional companies like Ford Motors Arizona Incorporated or ABC Corporation which moved into town from Scottsdale or Phoenixo Valley during that time period Although Nowitzki Avenue runs through downtowns past all these settlements there were no stores or restaurants open on Nowitzki Avenue at that time so residents would walk out into town where they could get their groceries if they needed them or go buy something else if they wanted it outside of town Limits
