The Arizona National Guard was organized on November 1, 1912. The first unit to arrive in Paradise Valley was the 131st Infantry Regiment from Tucson. It served until 1915. In 1916, the 2nd Battalion, 4th Regiment of the Arizona National Guard arrived and served for two years before being shipped to World War I. The unit returned home in 1919 and never left since. The 7th Infantry Regiment arrived in 1925 and served until 1941 when it was replaced by the 9th Infantry Regiment. The regiment again left for World War II but never joined the war effort because of budget cuts that year. From 1942-1945, the 11th Cavalry Squadron from Phoenix patrolled Paradise Valley while other units patrolled nearby Tombstone County. In 1945, both squadrons were disbanded and their equipment distributed among other units in order to maintain discipline within unit while still serving as a reserve force should any hostilities break out with Japan or Germany. After World War II ended, the regiment reverted back to its original name - the Arizona NationalGuard - on October 1, 1948 when it became an allvolunteer organization without a fixed headquarters location like most other state militias at that time. Over time however, Headquarters moved from Phoenix to Tucson several times due to various relocations within Arizona as well as changes in leadership withinthe guard itself (e.g., demotion of colonel after Desert Storm). On May 15, 2007 Headquarters relocated yet again – this time permanently – to Flagstaff’s Camp Verde Military Reservation where they have resided ever since
