Oro Valley is a small town in Pima County, Arizona. It is the only incorporated municipality in the county and its population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The villages of Oroville and Carbonado are unincorporated communities within the town. The first people to live in Oro Valley were the Anasazi who arrived around 1000 AD. The local Apache tribe also settled here for many years before being driven out by Spanish settlers in 1847. The area now known as Oro Valley was surveyed by George W. Hill in 1867 and named for General Anthony troops killed at San Jacinto that year. A post office was established at Oroville on October 14, 1868, and remained open until it closed on December 12, 1951. One of the most significant events from the early days of Oro Valley was when gold was discovered near present-day Carbonado Springs in January 1886 by James Hutton, a prospector working for John Sutter. This led to an influx of miners and entrepreneurs to this region which soon became one of the most important gold fields in Arizona. Not long after, silver discoveries began to be made as well; however, these did not lead to such an immediate boom due to lack of infrastructure and technical support needed for mining operations at that time. By 1907 there were over 1,000 residents living hereabouts with businesses totaling $1 million dollars! Today there are just over 200 residents living within downtown Oroville with no businesses or industries located outside of it other than agriculture (cattle raising) and tourism (the view from downtown). Today’s economy is diverse but still largely based on ranching and farming activities; however, there has been some progress made into manufacturing throughout recent years thanks to new investment including a winery (2006), printing press (2009), metal fabrication center (2010), plastics plant (2011), agricultural equipment dealership (2012) – all located outside of downtown Oroville proper but connected by Interstate 10 through what used to be called “The Ring Road” corridor running east-west between San Bernardino County and Pima Countygateways junction point south/northwestward passing through Cottonwood Canyon northeastward past White Sands Missile Range southwestward finally ending at Gila River National Monument northeastward where I-10 ends abruptly near what once was called Victoriano Mesa north/southwest side although access remains available via roadacerbously narrow dirt accessroad running adjacent west edge of Gila River National Monument southeastward paralleling riverbank until approximately midway across river where road becomes impassable due water flow resulting in part considerable destruction caused during winter months by storm runoff reaching upriver several hundred feet high turning large areas into raging torrential rivers throughout remainder of year creating hazardous conditions requiring close attention day & night especially during monsoon season when water levels are very high & dangerous); This highly productive Gold Rush era left behind numerous legacy products including many famous landmarks such as Sutter's Fort , Donner Pass Bridge , Alamo Beds Mine District , Gila River Dam etc.; today these places continue providing excellent visitor experiences while also earning themselves nicknames like "Gilded Empire" or "Gold Rush Disneyland". Since then much development has occurred both inside & outside Downtown Oroville despite difficult odds - making it one of fastest growing towns on our continent (& 5th fastest overall!) continually attracting more retirees & newcomers alike who appreciate everything about this vibrant community which continues setting new standards for excellence every day!
