Oro Valley is a small town in Arizona, nestled between the mountains and the wash that separates Phoenix and Tucson. The town has a population of around 2,500 people, most of whom are found in the downtown district. Oro Valley is located just east of Pima County on Route 66, which was once a major highway connecting Tucson with Phoenix. Today, Route 66 remains a popular tourist trail as it passes through several small towns before terminating at the Mexican border. The first residents of Oro Valley were members of the Hohonu nations who had been living along the wash since pre-historic times. One account reports that one such group built their homes on high ground overlooking the river. In 1859, while travelers were passing through Oro Valley on their way from Sedona to Winslow Lake, they saw an Indian village consisting of 100 or so teepees situated on high ground about two miles away from where present-day Oro Valley stands. In 1868 another group arrived and began construction on what would become known as " Little America", an irrigation system that would help irrigate crops in central Arizona for export to California. By 1870, over 1,000 people had settled in this area and by 1880 many businesses had been established including a tannery and grocery store. A number of events during these early years helped contribute to Oro Valley's growth: In 1879 local farmers formed the Central Arizona Water District (CAWD) to provide water supply for eastern Pinal County; in 1886 a citizens' meeting resulted in approving plans for what became known as "The Park" - an open space bounded by streets running north-south and east-west within which property owners could lease land for farming or other purposes; and in 1889 Major General John Alexander McKnight founded both Apache Wireless Co., Ltd., now part of Verizon Communications Inc., and McKnight Telephone Company Ltd., later renamed KTAR Radio Corporation (KTAR being Navajo for "Rocky Mountain"). During World War II there was significant military activity taking place near Oro Valley involving both American forces and Japanese troops: On July 10th 1945 soldiers from Company K1st Battalion 8th Infantry Regiment stationed at Camp Verde discovered enemy mines hidden beneath some trees close to US Border Patrol Station 5 south of town; when detonated explosives destroyed six tents used by Japanese troops; 4 Japanese officers were killed as well as numerous enlisted menaces amongst whose bodies lay items including rifles, grenades & pistols abandoned by their retreating forces moments earlier! In 1948 CAWD merged with United States Dole Canning Corp.; however despite this merger COVIDEN still produced produce fruit until 1975 when cannery closed due to recessionary conditions caused by increased competition from other food processors.. By 1957 only 14%of all crop production came from agriculture but overall livestock production grew rapidly averaging more than 20% per year until 1978 when it began decreasing again due to drought & continued competition from imports.. Over time even thoughfigure declined various industries have remained including medical technology which employs many locals (especially nurses), heavy manufacturing (steel manufacture being particularly important), library services & tourism .. even today there are numeroussmall businesses doing Main Street Businesses like home improvement stores (& large outlets similar to Costco)...
