In 1918, Oro Valley became an incorporated city with a population of 2,500 people. The steel division closed down in 1982 and the town fell into obscurity until it regained its prominence in 2009 when it was chosen to become one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites for revitalization of Great American Towns program.
