The regiment was quickly renamed the Mesa Cavalry and served throughout the Mexican-American War and during World War II. The first military unit in Mesa was organized on December 17, 1899 when a company of United States Marines arrived from San Diego to take up arms against bandits terrorizing southern Arizona. The Marines were soon joined by another company from Tucson commanded by Captain John S. Welch and they soon became a formidable force dealing with numerous outlaws across CentralArizona. However, their success was short-lived as hostilities came to a head with Mexico's war for independence from Spain and an increased demand for American troops in areas such as Apache Pass and Tombstone . On January 6, 1900 two companies of Marines (the 1st Battalion) arrived from Hawaii at Terminal Island docks aboard USS Constitution which had just come into dry dock for repairs following her collision with HMS Vengeance off Maui . In 1903, Major William Halsey erected a small fort on what is now part of I-10 east of downtown Mesa while he awaited construction of Fort Huachuca which would eventually become one of America’s best defended border crossings. That year also saw the arrival in town of First Lieutenant Clarence Burchfield’s 3rd Battalion California Infantry who were attached to First Marine Division under command General James Laughlin during World War I maneuvers near Globe Enclosure southwest of Phoenix . In 1911 Mayor Charles Barkley founded the City Club which functioned as an unofficial headquarters for city government until 1924 when it moved into its current location on West Broadway Street next door to City Hall where it still meets today. On October 20th, 1912 President Teddy Roosevelt presented General Pershing with a rifle system featuring new 12 ga ammunition that had been developed at Park Service Armory in Tucson . That same year saw the founding by Mayor Barkley (along with other civic leaders) of Red Cross Ambulance service providing medical aid during wars including World War I and II . After years spent being located at various locations within city limits such as Town Hall or Anastasia Avenue Jail (later known as Eastern State Penitentiary), Red Cross Service Station #4 was finally dedicated on November 2nd, 1951 adjacent to Citizens Bank Building southwest corner thereof on land donated by Mrs. Mildred Ewing Harding underneath courthouse steps.. Mesa, Arizona is a small town located in Pinal County, Arizona. It is an agricultural area and has been inhabited by the Hopi and Pima Indians since before European Settlement began. The first white people to arrive in Mesa were Mormon pioneers who founded the city of Mesa in 1864. Mormon settlers abandoned Mesa in 1893, but sporadic settlement continued until 1912 when oil exploration began in the area. In 1914, a group of Arizonans named themselves the "Mesa Five" and established themselves as ranchers and farmers near what is now downtown Mesa. They engaged in land speculation and development until their death in 1948. In 1954, Phoenix was created from parts of Pinal County including Mesa, making it one of the most populous cities in Arizona. From 1949 to 1957, Mesa was part of Yuma County; however, because Phoenix had become more populous than any other incorporated municipality within Yuma County, on July 1st 1957 Mesa became its own independent municipal entity under the jurisdiction of Phoenix. As an agricultural area with limited industry outside of agriculture during this time period, Mesa developed few significant modern amenities such as commercial or cultural facilities until after 1959 when construction began on Scottsdale's ValleyFair shopping mall which replaced downtown Mesa as the primary shopping district for residents of both cities. The City Beautiful Movement characterized ValleyFair as aesthetically pleasing while creating problems for valley farmland that would be needed for growing crops if mall development proceeded unchecked; therefore public pressure led to prohibitions against further development at Valley Fair beginning in 1965 and continuing through present day.[1] The cityscape today reflects major changes that took place throughout much of twentieth century:slavery ended (1848), women gained suffrage (1912), large-scale suburban sprawl started (1954),Phoenix annexed much smaller towns eastward relative to population growth (1957-1966),and eventually automobile use made valley farming necessary for new residents (1965-present). Today's skyline view from downtown Mesa shows all these changes combined; originally scruffy little streets are now very clean boulevards with high-rise buildings looming above them like ancient ruins seen from space![2]
