The Mesa military deployment gift history can be traced back to World War II. In 1942, Mesa was home to the Arizona Air National Guard and its Boeing P-40s. The P-40s were used in aerial campaigns against the Japanese during World War II. During the war, Mesa also became involved in the production of munitions. In 1948, Mesa's Air Force Base was opened and it served as a major air base for the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Air Force Base provided a large amount of space for storage and erection of facilities for Aircraft Production Command (AFC) aircraft manufacturing plants. In 1961, when Arizona became an independent state, Mesa's Air Force Base was transferred from the United States Army to the Department of Defense as part of Operation Springboard. As a result of this transfer, Mesa became an instant city within the newly created Phoenix metropolitan area. Since then, Mesa has seen many changes both inside and outside of its walls: from being one of only two cities in Arizona with a professional football team (the other being Scottsdale) to becoming one of America's most diverse cities with residents coming from all over the world. Today, Mesa is still known for its vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions - including its popular annual music festivals - while also ensuring that no aspect OF life is left untouched by military service or deployments abroad: downtown Merchants District businesses are now open 24/7 due to DoD funding meant specifically towards downtown revitalization
Mesa, Arizona is the most populous city in Arizona and one of the most important economic and cultural centers in the state. The city is located on the east side of Phoenix, about 25 miles (40 km) north of central Phoenix. Mesa's population has increased rapidly over the past few decades, reaching more than 200,000 people by 2000. The growth of Mesa has been due to a variety of factors, including new housing developments and expansions of existing businesses; an increase in traffic congestion and air quality problems; and a growing number of Latino immigrants who have come to work or live in Phoenix. Mesa's economy is based on several sectors: manufacturing, research and development activities at universities such as Arizona State University (ASU), other colleges and universities, government services, health care services, tourism industries (including resorts), retail trade and service sector jobs. The history of Mesa begins with European exploration by Spanish explorers in 1540s. A group led by Captain José María de la Hoz journeyed northwest from Santa Fe on October 20–24 1825 to explore this new land before returning southward to winter at Taos Pueblo under General Antonio López de Santa Anna on December 1.–3 1825. On February 14, 1828 Governor Manuel Micheletto ordered Juan Bautista Elías Dominguez y Salinas to establish presidios near Tucson because he perceived a threat from Apache Indians living near Tucson Mountains rimmed by Mexican territory that had not yet been explored westward beyond Gila River Valley where future California settlements were going up (later called Yuma County).
