In 1912, Tucson entrepreneur Harry Chandler organized a group of investors to buy 7,000 acres (26 km2) of east-central Phoenix land for $1 per acre ($ 28 per hectare). They named their company Phoenix Coffee Company after their first crop from that year’s planting operations on 5 miles (8 km) north of downtown Phoenix. Chandler sold most or all his interest in Phoenix Coffee Company within two years; however it continued to produce quality coffee until 1978 when it merged with another Tucson-based company, Phoenicia Farms Limited Partnership.
