Mesa is named after Francisco Mesa and his wife Indianola. The land that now makes up Mesa was part of two grants given to Juan Manuel de Alvarado by Spain in 1764. In 1868 Mexican War veteran General Mariano Escobar purchased 640 acres (248 ha) southeast of downtown Tucson for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). He named it "Mesa" after his father-in-law's rancho from which he derived most of his wealth as commander during the warring period following Mexico's independence from Spain. The first post office in Mesa opened on February 15th, 1888.
