Policemen have been present in Maricopa, Arizona for many years now. Maricopa County, Arizona is a county located in the state of Arizona. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,047, up from 1,927 at the 2000 census. The county seat is Phoenix. Maricopa County was formed on January 14, 1912 from parts of Pima and Maricopa counties. The area now occupied by Maricopa County was part of what was then known as Yuma County. On November 6, 1864, Yuma County was divided into two parts – Prescott and Apache Counties – which were in turn divided into four districts: East Apache District (now Tolleson), West Apache District (now University City), North Apache District (now Paradise Valley), and South Apache District (now Globe). Each district had a judge and sheriff who had power to make arrests and conduct prosecutions. In 1912, when Phoenix became an incorporated city with its own government, it requested that all the unincorporated areas within its borders be transferred to Phoenix so thatPhoenix would have more tax revenue to spent on public services instead of private enterprise. The Phoenix City Council approved this request on January 14th., 1912. The following year saw some significant changes within Maricopa County as a result of these transfers: - In 1914 Canon Law No 24 amended the Arizona Constitution to allow for judicial review of election results by citizens’ committees rather than individual justices; - On February 16th., 1915 portions of Buckeye Township east of Interstate 10 were added to Mesa County; - On May 12th., 1916 Granite Mountain Recreation Area north of Interstate 8was annexed into Maricopa County; - On October 15th., 1920 Mohave Indian Nation land east of Interstate 10was also annexed into MaricOPAcounty; - Finally on April 15th., 1923 Navajo Nation land west of Interstate 10was also annexed intoMaricopaCounty

Maricopa County is located in the southeastern corner of Arizona. The county was first organized on February 14, 1853, and became a part of the United States of America on November 15, 1912. The population of Maricopa County was 821,824 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Phoenix. The area that now makes up Maricopa County has been inhabited by Native American cultures for more than 10,000 years. After European settlement began in the mid-19th century, Apache and Pima Apache warriors led successful attacks against Spanish settlers in what is now Maricopa County. In 1847, Arizona Territory was created from parts of New Mexico and Arizona Territory included most of what is now Maricopa County. On January 6, 1850, after much argument between Mexicanists and Anglo Americans over boundaries within the new territory, hostilities broke out when an Apache raiding party killed nine Hispanic settlers near Yuma Creek Bridge just south of present-day Phoenix. In 1851 Mormon missionaries arrived in central Arizona to preach to Native American groups and they soon started moving into areas east of Yuma Creek Bridge including parts of today’s Phoenix metropolitan area. By 1860 about 60 percent of all Arizonans were Mormon immigrants from Utah or Idaho who had come seeking religious freedom from Saint George’s Rule imposed by British Mormons during their time as captives at Salt Lake City (see History Timeline: 1847-2010). In 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation designating Flagstaff as the site for a new Ulysses S Grant military academy which would be known as Mount Union (later West Point). Governor Goodwin Bond (1865-68) turned down offers from other states to become president because he wanted Tucson retained as the capital city despite large settler interests in Prescott with plans to move northward across Scotts Valley towards Tucsonville; see also: timeline: 1861-1968]. On May 2nd 1870 Vice President Andrew Johnson announced that Mount Union would not be built because “the location cannot be selected without disturbance to agricultural interests which are too great” so Tucson would take over instead becoming “the Capital City under our Constitution which means that it should always have its full share in all decisions made about Agriculture and Commerce . . . Prominent citizens are hereby requested to visit this place every week during September so that there may be no mistake about our wishes” (Lincoln Proclamation No 5). With these announcements cities throughout eastern Arizona submitted bids for site selection but only Flagstaff claimed success with $5 million being invested into developing downtown according to Johnston et al., “A Pattern Emerges Which Would Not Be repeated Again until After World War II”(page 228). EventuallyMount Union opened on October 16th 1870 serving primarily Confederate General Robert E Lee along with other dignitaries such as US Senator John Kennedy who later served twice terms as governor before dying suddenly while campaigning for president in 1964((See Also Related Pages: Mount Union Military Academy)).
