The Maricopa Air National Guard's history goes back to World War II. The unit was activated as the 527th Bombardment Group on October 15, 1942 at Yuma Army Air Field, Arizona. The group trained for combat in New Mexico and flew missions over Japan during the war. In 1945, the 527th BG was redesignated the 555th Bombardment Squadron and assigned to Ninth Air Force at Taos Army Airfield, New Mexico. There they conducted bombing raids against targets in Japan including Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1948, the 555th BS was transferred to Roswell Army Air Base, New Mexico where they were again redesignated as the 555th Bombardment Squadron (Strategic). They served with Eighth Air Force until Prominence AFB became operational in 1951 when they were reassigned to First Tactical Aerospace Division which moved from Randolph AFB Texas to Maricopa County Airport on December 1st of that year. With this change in airbase location came a new squadron name - The 355th Bombardment Wing (Air Defense). As part of First Tactical Aerospace Division it was responsible for defending Phoenix International Airport from enemy attacks untilactivated on July 17, 1957 when it merged into Second Tactical Fighter Wing which remained active until its closure on September 2nd of that year. After activation of Second Tactical Fighter Wing there existed an air defense mission called "Wafer" which involved releasing small pieces of high explosive fragmentation devices from C-130Hs over Phoenix International Airport during peacetime so as not to scare away visitors or disrupt business operations used by civilians without fighter protection equipment! On three occasions during the Vietnam War large quantities of munitions were dropped near Phoenix International Airport by United States AIR FORCE ACFT while conducting training flights - May 3rd 1968; November 30th 1970; and February 8ths 1971! Consequently much damage was done to buildings near runway 04R & 22L while no injuries occurred! It is interesting to note that incendiary bombs also caused extensive damage at this airport during these exercises! These tests helped develop tactics for use against enemy aircraft carpet bombing campaigns ! On April 21st 1978 USAF ACFT made an emergency landing at Pima County Municipal Airport after hitting powerlines with their bomb load containers!!!! This marked one time only in history when an American Aircraft Corporation C-123F Stratofortress had made a forced landing during wartime operations!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Arizona Air National Guard has a long and rich history in Maricopa County. The unit was activated on Dec. 12, 1912 when the 1st Arizona Aero Squadron was activated at Yuma Army Depot. It served in World War I as part of the 5th Aero Squadron and then during World War II became the 4th Fighter Wing; it operated P-40s and F4U Corsairs. In 1961, the wing was redesignated as the 4th Tactical Attack Wing (TAW) which flew Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye aircraft into Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. The wing deployed to Okinawa in 1972 as part of Operation Linebacker II and again in 1975 during Operation Neptune's Spear when they supported ground forces fighting against Vietnamese Communists. In 1979, TAW was redesignated as the 8th Tactical Attack Wing (TAW) which flew Lockheed Martin F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft into Nicaragua duringOperation Anaconda before returning to Ramstein AFB Germany for storage in 1984. From 1992 until 1995, TAW operated USAF E-3 Sentry AWACS planes from Grand Canyon Airport providing airspace security over Phoenix area airports while being used for ANG training missions also from Grand Canyon Airport out of Tucson airport In 2006, TAW became an inactive unit with no active duty assignments currently listed on their website

GHQ was responsible for all aspects of fighter and bomber aviation within theAAF and played a critical role in developing America's first operational nuclear weapons. In 1948, the USAF became an independent service with its own command structure. The following year, President Harry S Truman created the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAF Europa) as a subordinate command to USAAF Central Command. In 1951, USAF Europa merged with United States Air Forces Africa to form United States Air Forces Europe/Africa (USAFE). During World War II, theAAF had operated two large air forces: The European War Department commanded by Major General Leigh Keyes and First Army commanded by Lieutenant General George C Marshall. After the war ended, these commands were combined into United States Army Air Forces (USAFA), which limited its activities to strategic bombing during peacetime. However, when America entered World War II again after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 there was no longer any distinction between strategic bombers and fighter planes! This caused great concern among Americans because it meant that our country would be engaged in another long war against an enemy that we could not beat militarily! To prevent this from happening we decided to pool our resources and create an new organization calledthe USAF! The USAF was formed on February 1st 1942 with headquarters at Wright-Patterson AFB near Cleveland OH. At its inception, Aerospace Industries Incorporated - one of America's leading manufacturer of aircraft engines - donated $500,000 towards acquisition of aircraft including P-38s and F-86 Sabres. On October 17th 1942 Major General Hoyt Vandenberg assumed command of USAAF West Coast Area which included California; Nevada; Arizona; Oregon; Washington State; Yukon Territory; Northwest Territories including Alaska; Hawaii and Guam! On November 5th 1942 Vice Admiral John W Leahy assumed command of United States Navy Mediterranean Area which included Tripoli Harbour where he began operations against Italian forces operating out of that harbour! By May 1945 both armies had been reorganized under Commanderin Chief Allied Expeditionary Force (COMAEF) so that Allied Task Force 100 comprised RAF Bomber Command RAF effort against targets across Germany including Hamburg Docks/Port H20 as well as other important German industrial centres such as Kielce Gdańsk Breslau Poznań Szczecin Plock Dresden Leipzig Rostock Wilhelmshaven!! These air campaigns are known collectively as the Battle of Europe!!!
