The city of Marana was founded by John Wesley Powell on July 24th 1912 while he was exploring the Mojave Desert with his Exploratory Party. The name of the town came from his wife Mara who named it after her birthplace - Damascus in Syria. When Powell first arrived at Mesa Verde National Park he noticed that there were no trees or water sources available so he decided to build himself a small rancho near where he now stands oncotate Creek which flows into Bisbee River about two miles east of today's downtown Marana The original structures consisted of just twelve rifles which housed six men inside each rifle chamber with one bullet leaving each chamber every thirty seconds or so! These early ranches were incredibly primitive compared to what we know today but they did provide food and shelter for many pioneers who traveled through our area during those early days In 1919, when most all U.S./Mexican border towns had been abandoned because of raids by raiders led by Don Carlos Menchaca following President Wilson's Executive Order 9066 which called for Americanization Of all Native Americans living east Of Mexico City including Arizonans like myself Powell decided that if I am going to cross this great desert I'm going To do it alone & He started building not one but TWO houses just southeast of today’s downtown . This marked probably one of America’s earliest self reliance movements as individuals began manufacturing their own tools & materials necessary for their journey across this vast landscape

The city of Marana, Arizona is located in the Apache Nation Indian Reservation. The city was founded by Mormon settlers in 1873 and named after President George Washington's daughter, Martha Washington. The population of Marana peaked at over 20,000 in 1900 but has since decreased to around 10,000 today. Marana is a small town with a single mainstreet that runs perpendicular to the tribal reservation boundary. The main street is also home to the local hospital and various businesses. It is primarily an agricultural town with many small businesses servicing the area from their properties or from neighboring towns which are accessible via Interstate 10. Marana was formally dedicated as a city on July 9, 1973 by then-Mayor John A. Browning and then-Councilman Clyde Hodge Jr.. At that time, it had a population of just over 10 people and consisted of only one block on Main Street. Today, however, there are several buildings within Marana's boundaries which were once part of its municipal government including the City Hall (now known as Valley del Sol High School), Water Treatment Plant No 1 (now known as Pioneer Elementary), Police Department Headquarters (now known as West High School), Fire Department Station 3 (now known as East High School), and Park Avenue Shopping Center - all while still serving as property belonging to the tribe which manages them. In recent years, Marana has seen some revitalization through development projects such as South Village redevelopment that includes new housing developments along South Village Boulevard outside of town limits while still adhering to traditional Apache/Mormon teachings about communal living and land ownership democratically among community members themselves instead of through elected officials or developers who may be beholden to other interests altogether.
