Marana, Arizona is an agricultural and ranching town located in Pinal County, Arizona. The population was 8,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first European explorers to visit Marana were Father José de Urquiza and Father Antonio López in 1821. They named the place Isleta Grande after a small island they sighted on their way from Tucson to Sonora. A post office was established at Isleta Grande in 1827, and by 1830 there were 1,500 residents living hereabouts. In 1881, John Wesley Powell announced his intention to explore the interior of Arizona through what is now Pinal County. After arriving in Marana on July 9th of that year with three other men—John Wesley Powell, George Wyeth and Charles Waddell—Powell began exploring Canelo Hills east of present-day Scottsdale before continuing his route up Apache Pass into central Arizona via Prescott and Yuma City. On July 20th he reached the headwaters of Green River which he called "Powell's River". A day later he reached a location about 10 miles southeast of town along today's Arizonan–Marana Road which he named Silver Springs after silver mines near Tooele (now Utah). In early November 1881 Powell described this site as follows: "A well-defined spring issues from an elongated hillock or depression; its outlet flows northwest towards Cottonwood Creek" today's Arizonan–Marana Road north of Silver Springs village (site now occupied by Kingman Park). He also noted that "the surrounding country is rolling sandstone Mesa covered with brush interspersed with shrubs." At this point it appears that Powell had discovered what would become Marana if additional land wasn't acquired for mining purposes prior to his arrival: Today's Cochise National Forest covers much of what was once prospected for silver deposits nearby including parts of present-day Goldfield and Apache Junction counties as well as most or all of today's Pinal County. This initial exploration led to many more settlers being brought overland from Tucson into what became Marana during the next few years following

The first Europeans to arrive in Marana were Spanish explorers in 1769. They named the place San Pedro de la Laguna after their leader, Pedro de La Hoz. The first known habitation in what is now Marana was by Pueblo Sevilla, which arrived in 1827. In 1868, construction began on the present courthouse building which would serve as a center for justice and business until it burned down in 1916. In 1905, Marana became a city when it was incorporated under Arizona state law. The population of Marana grew rapidly during World War II due to its military headquarters located here. After the war ended, many businesses closed and the population declined until it peaked at around 60 people in the early 1960s. However, since then there have been steady growth rates with the current population reaching over 100 people today. One of the most important aspects of Marana’s history is its role as a stop on Route 66. This route served as a key corridor for goods and travelers between California and central Mexico during times when travel was difficult or impossible without horses or other means of transportation.[1] Highway 66 played an even more important role after President Dwight Eisenhower built Interstate 10 through much of central Arizona in the late 1950s[2]. As I-10 became increasingly congested, drivers looking to avoid Phoenix took Route 66 south instead; this allowed traders and travelers from southern Mexico to reach Tucson without having to go through Phoenix or Albuquerque.[3] Today Route 66 remains one of several major tourist attractions within town; other attractions include shopping malls located near downtown while also being home to several restaurants and nightlife options including casinoskbna
Marana was founded in 1863 by the Marana brothers. The town prospered due to its irrigation system and trade with the Pima, Apache, and Navajo people. In 1887, a westward expansion of the U.S. Railway caused a boom in Marana’s economy and industry. By 1907, Marana had a population of around 350 people. However, during World War I, Marana was heavily bombed by the United States military as part of an effort to starve Japan into submission. As a result of this bombing campaign, many businesses were destroyed or damaged and the population dropped below 200 people by 1919. Despite this setback, Marana continued to grow slowly until it hit its peak in the late 1930s when it had a population of around 1,000 people. However, during World War II againMarana experienced heavy bombing which destroyed much of its infrastructure including most of the town’s buildings and homes. As a result, only about 50% of what is left from Maranas past is still extant today making it one of Arizona’s least-preserved communities
