Lake Havasu City is a city in the U.S. state of Arizona, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census, and 2,098 at the 2013 estimate. The town was founded in 1867 by Mormon pioneers working for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). It became an incorporated city in 1912. The name "Havasu" comes from Apache Chief Cochise's words "We will have our Havasu" which means "the great waterfalls". In 1915, LDS President Lorenzo Snow called upon His people to move westward as they saw an opportunity to extend their territory into what is now southern California while still remaining true to their religious beliefs and commitments to serve God and his people. In 1928, when Havasu City was designated as one of six towns in Phoenix that would form the new consolidated city government under Mayor Harry Waddell, it had a population of only 614 residents. Growth continued unabated through World War II; by 1951, Havasu City had reached its peak with a population of 3,849 residents living in 585 businesses and buildings. However growth began to slow down after war-time rationing halted most construction projects and increased competition from other nearby cities during peacetime. By 1960 Havasu City’s population totaled 2,371 residents living within 905 acres (362 hectares) atop high desert hills outside Phoenix proper limits – less than one-fifth its original size On July 14th 1965 both memberships were revoked by Utah Governor Allyn Bachelet due to Salt Lake Valley housing shortage concerns related to Expo '65 centennial celebration being held concurrently there; this revocation created community wide uproar throughout Phoenix metropolitan area culminating with massive street demonstrations erupting all over metropolitan area culminating with police response that resulted in several injuries including hospitalization for several dozen individuals . resulting in large financial losses for many small business owners who could not compete against larger multi-national corporations who enjoyed exemptions from local ordinances governing hours/location etc.– another major setback for downtownPhoenix specifically retail merchants who made up nearly two thirds or entire industry prior thereto
