By 1920, there were over 1,000 people living in what would become Lake Havasarúpio; by 1930 there were 10 businesses with a combined payroll worth $2 million; during World War II there was growth due to construction work on land east of Interstate 10 near Nogales that produced munitions plants; by 1960 phone service had been introduced to most areas within city limits. Today many residents commute into Phoenix or Tucson but there are still several hundred businesses providing services such as manufacturing and transportation services that operate within city limits
