Lake Havasu City, Arizona is a city located in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The population was 20,813 at the 2010 census. Commodore John Dallaire discovered an extensive silver deposit at Sulfur Springs in 1863 but failed to develop it because of cost overruns; he assigned engineer George Hudnut to investigate instead and found that water supplies could be augmented by opening up nearby lakes so that irrigation could be developed for corn, wheat, cattle, grapeseed oil production and other crops. Hudnut recommended using navigable canals rather than open rivers to get produce to market because then prices would be lower than if transport were needed along narrow roads leading nowhere except into Mexico or California markets where goods were high priced but not risky since transportation risks were capitalized on by speculators who bought stocks in railroads).
