Kingman, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 1,253 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Kingman Peak, which is a mountain in central Pima County. The peak is named for General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment who fought against the Sioux in 1876. The first post office in Kingman was established on December 4, 1884. The name of the town was changed to Kingman on January 1, 1907. On May 10, 1912 the townsite was annexed by Tucson and became part of that city's municipality. In 1933 Kingman lost its status as an incorporated municipality and reverted back to its original designation as a unincorporated community within Pima County. In 1984 it amalgamated with nearby San Miguel to form the present-day City of Kingman. Today, Kingman maintains its small-town atmosphere with dusty streets and narrow alleys that lead to small businesses along Main Street. It also has a strong intercultural diversity due to its rich cultural heritage dating back to when it was founded as a Native American village called Tonto Village (now part of downtown Tucson). Kingman, Arizona is an incorporated city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. In 1861 Kingman was founded as a small town on the east side of the Gila River by Mormon settlers who had traveled down from Nauvoo, Illinois. It became a major wagon and stagecoach stop on the I-10 corridor. A post office called Kingman was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it closed in 1951. In 1912 Kingman developed its own water system with six wells and twoFilter plants to serve the community and surrounding agricultural area. By 1916 it had also erected a large general store which remain a landmark in the community today. The first school in Kingman opened in 1917 and served grades one through twelve until it burned down in 1981; however, another school was built soon after to replace it. The present day Kingsmen High School was built in 1966 using money raised by local businesses during World War II when towns were encouraged to build new schools as part of National Defenseprograms. The city has seen many changes over time including annexation by Phoenix into Pinal County in 1912, prohibition of alcoholic beverages (1913), establishment of fire districts within the city limits (1924), major expansion into adjacent districts (1929), rapid growth following World War II with development of nearby agricultural land (1946), decline following 1960s suburbanization (1972-1981) and reestablishment of downtown as an anchor district for retail development (1991).
