Gilbert, as the nucleus of what is now the Gilbert Marine Museum and Library. Gilbert has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on the Köppen Climate Classification system. The town of Gilbert was founded in 1886 by John Tipton and his wife Anna. The name comes from the Apache word "gilbert," meaning "happy." Gilbert grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its strategic location as a stop on stagecoach routes between Phoenix and Tucson and its easy accessibility by wagon train from central Mexico City. In 1907, Gilbert became an incorporated city and functioned as an important center for agriculture until World War II when it became a military training base for the USAAF. Today, Gilbert remains an agricultural community with cattle herds that provide milk and meat products for local residents and tourists alike. Agricultural production accounts for over 60% of the town's economic activity which supports about 350 jobs.
