Fountain Hills is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The community was named for Fountain of Youth, a Mormon pilgrimage site known for its waterfalls and springs. In 1887, when Pima County was organized, Fountain Hills had a population of just 10 people. By 1920, it had grown to over 100 residents. By 1970, it had reached its current size. Fountain Hills began as an agricultural community that grew crops and raised livestock until the early 21st century when Can-Am Airlines opened an airport there and started using the town as a basecamp for flying passengers and freight between Phoenix and Tucson (and other points inwestern Arizona). The use of the airport caused many businesses to close or relocate their operations to more suburban areas; however, some of these families have kept their businesses in Fountain Hills through various incarnations such as: family-owned local general stores; restaurant/bar holdings including A Better Life Cafe & Brewery; homebuilders/restaurants such as First Choice Homes; truck stop operators like Pizza Hut and Camping World Truckstop; daycare providers like Homejoy Daycare Centers Inc.; arts organizations like AZ Arts Consortium Gallery Inc., which has exhibited work in Fountain Hills since 1978; real estate interests including The Villages Group LLC., which owns two adjacent homes on Camelback Rd.; philanthropic organizations including Mesa Community Foundation;; developers who have built new subdivisions in recent years include Accent Communities LLC., who developed Vista Ridge subdivision near Interstate 15 entrance into Phoenix while also developing properties adjacent to Camelback Road called Rancho Mirage II ; and finally tech billionaires Larry Ellison and Sergey Brin who own parcels adjoining Camelback Road east of I-15 known as Googleplex East . In recent years there has been increasing interest from residents in revitalizing downtown Fountain Hills with new restaurants/bars/cafes/stores etc..
