By 1900 there were more than 100 people living in Fountain Hills. The discovery of oil near Phoenix in 1907 led to increased development around Fountain Hills with new businesses coming up such as breweries and hotel/motels. The population peaked at 15,000 during World War II but then fell off as many residents left for military service or other opportunities overseas. However, since 1990s growth has resumed with a number of new businesses opening up including restaurants and nightlife along with continued investment by developers into housing and retail spaces downtown.
