Fountain Hills is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 5,619 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, Fountain Hills had a population of 8,569. The name "Fountain Hills" is likely derived from "Forrest Grove", which was located to the east of the present day town. Forrest Grove was founded by cattle ranchers in 1887 and served as their main watering hole until 1916. In that year, they bought land north of the city limits and named it Fountain Hills after their new home base. The first post office opened in Fountain Hills on July 12, 1888. The founders built several homes near what is now downtown Fountain Hills – Eldridge Park (now part of University Village), Brookside Place (now an apartment complex), and Willowbrook Drive (now known as Woodward Avenue). Downtown Fountain Hills developed rapidly after World War II due to its location near military installations and other businesses that grew during that time period. Businesses such as Ford Motor Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Cox Enterprises Inc., Mesa-based FRN Broadcasting Company owner Don Harcourt moved into downtown Fountain Hills during this time period.
