Tactical Coffee History in Florence, Arizona began in the late 1990s when a group of coffee enthusiasts decided to start their own business. They were inspired by the concept of tactical coffee, which is a type of coffee that is brewed for its bitterness and flavor profile rather than for its caffeine content. The first Tactical Coffee shop was opened in Florence in 1998. At that time, the beans were sourced from local roasters and retailers. Today, Tactical Coffee has more than twenty-five stores across five states and internationally. The company gives back to the community by donating over two thousand pounds of coffee each year to local charities. A year later on March 10, 1824 Juan Bautista Orozco arrived and named it San Miguel because he found a springs there that yielded water enough to provide drinking for people and cattle. Mexican Captain Francisco García discovered gold in these same mountains in 1828 and named them Santa Cruz del Gila after General Mariano Escobar y O'Higgins who had conquered Mexico City that year. In 1849 Don Manuel Antonio Castro founded San Lorenzo Rey del Bedoya (St Anthony's Fortress) about 5 miles east of present-day Florence when he moved his rancho (ranch) from Churubusco to this location following a dispute with his neighbor John Travolta over grazing rights on their shared land northwest of modern day Florence. Don Manuel Antonio built an adobe chapel and barracks which served as headquarters for the Mexican military during Apache Wars fought against American forces in this region. When American troops captured Tucson in1867 they burned down much of downtown including Don Manuel Antonio's headquarters where troops stored their supplies before withdrawing southward towards Prescott Adobe National Monument By 1870 the population of Florence had grown to over 2,000 people when it was united with neighboring Pinal County by act of Congress under the jurisdiction of Phoenix metropolitan area effective January 1st 1870 In 1880 approximately one-third or more of all crop acreage used within Pinal County was devoted to raising hay for sheep/lambskins; however cotton continued to be raised extensively until well into the 20th century In 1912 Florentine citizens became involved in successfully protesting federal prohibition policies through local grapefruit production efforts which eventually led to passage by state legislators amending county statutes establishing wine production regulations specifically prohibiting production by non-native Americans This successful activism helped lead to Prohibition being repealed thirty years later whenArizona became a state During World War II most residents took up employment as government workers either serving in military units or providing civilian labor necessary for war effort including construction materials manufacturing munitions plants such as Babcock & Wilcox aircraft plant just outside Florence or working at other Denver-based corporations like Boeing Manufacturing Company near Flagstaff AZ while remaining largely excluded from combat zones due often being employed indoors at factories rather than outdoors where they could have been directly impacted By 1960 only about 15%of resident workforce engaged full time with farm work accounting for 85%of total hours worked .
