Florence, Arizona was founded on February 14, 1912 by the husband and wife team of John Wesley Powell and Florence Bowers. The town was named after Florence, Italy where he had learned about the water resources and prospecting potential for coal and silver in 1875. The original population of Florence was just a handful of men living in tents on the outskirts of town. By 1915, when Florence became a census-designated place (CDP), it had grown to over 1,000 residents. The city’s growth came from its location near Surplus Waterhole Creek which provided access to reliable water supplies needed for mills and other businesses in the area. In addition to its location, Florentine charm made it an attractive destination for people looking for a suburban lifestyle without having to leave their homes or climates. Today, Florence is home to more than 50 businesses that employ over 100 people along with three libraries, two parks system campuses, four colleges/universities (Arizona State University (ASU), Northern Arizona University (NAU), Prescott Valley Community College District No. 2) as well as two churches – First Baptist Church of Florence and Stonington Presbyterian Church – both based in downtown Florentine. While many aspects of Italian culture remain popular today within Florentine society such as foodie attractions like Pizzeria Don Giovanni and Zibetto’s – a street market that takes place every Saturday morning inside Don Giovanni’s restaurant – other aspects have changed significantly since 1912 including political correctness being one prominent example. One recent example involving local artist Bobbi Brownell who created artwork depicting spaghetti straps crossing breasts has generated much controversy among locals with some arguing that it objectifies women while others defend her right to express herself freely through art without prior approval from those in charge. In 1898, Florence was founded as a small trading post on the banks of the Gila River. The town grew rapidly and by 1907 it had a population of over 1,500 people. The post office was moved to its present location in 1912 and the first store opened that year. The town prospered until World War I when it was destroyed by a fire. After the war, Florence resumed its growth and in 1925 it became an incorporated city with a population of over 10,000 people. In 1941, Florence was renamed after Italian Prime Minister Enrico Colombo. Florence is home to two universities: Phoenix State University and Arizona State University. It also has several businesses including Kmart, Safeway and Pizza Hut.
