By 1890, both towns had over 10,000 residents with more than $2 million worth of businesses conducted within their limits. In 1902–1903, when federal troops fought an abortive uprising by Apache Indians against Spanish colonial rule in Phoenix–Mesa region during the Mexican Revolution–Founded Father Cavanaugh's Holy Cross Catholic Church became known as "The Cradle of Arizona." At that time much of Pinal County lay within Apache tribal territory which continued until 1912 when Ulysses S Grant signed Treaty 7 along with other tribe leaders ending hostilities between Apache Americans and Mexican government forces occupying southwestern Arizona during the American Southwest War (1865-1870).
