Eloy is located in the United States of America, about 120 miles east of Phoenix. The town was established by Mormon settlers in 1847 and named for Brigham Young, the founder of the LDS church. The population of Eloy as of 2010 was 11,773. The majority of residents are Mormon Mormons who live in the townsite of Eloy and some small villages near it. There is also a small population of non-Mormon Indians that live around the nearby reservation. The climate in Eloy is mild year-round with average temperatures ranging from 78 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit (26 to 36 degrees Celsius). Summers are generally hot and sunny, while winters are generally cold but sometimes mild. Snow rarely occurs in Eloy. Most people here speak English as their first language, though there are also many local Spanish speakers. Spanish is also widely understood among some Native American groups living around town. Eloy, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The downtown core of Eloy is home to the Eloy Historical Museum, which opened in 1984 and has been open every day except Saturday since then. The first settlers in what is now Eloy were Mormon missionaries who arrived there on December 8, 1867. The first post office was established here on December 14th of that year. A store and mill were built near present-day Interstate 10 and Griggs Road soon afterwards. In 1872 Prescott came into being as a result of the addition of land east of First Street between Griggs and Keystone Roads for $2 per acre (or $10 for all lands). This community would eventually be renamed Prescott after General James Halleck Prescott who served as Governor of Arizona from 1888 to 1893 under President Grover Cleveland's administration. According to oral history collected by Donnie Cook from his father, pioneer Tom Cooksey operated a general store here until his death in 1903 due to yellow fever contracted while traveling through Mexico City with his family on their way back home from an LDS mission there;[1] hence Prescott becomes the name given to what is now central Eloy during this early period when it was inhabited primarily by Mormons only (and not Americans).[2] In 1886 Mexican soldiers occupied what are now easternside streets in central Eloy while they fought against US forces fighting Northern Mexico independence movement known as the Wars for Independence; consequently many buildings located along those streets such as government buildings that still remain today are said to be examples of occupation architecture.[3][4][5][6] After this time most residents migrated away from central Eloy towards newer areas including Mesa and Ahwatukee neighborhoods where development took place beginning around 1910 following passage by state legislature called "An Act To Encourage Immigration" which created incentives for farmers and others interested in coming westward into Colorado territory newly acquired via Treaty With Spain over late 1800s;[7] furthermore according to historian Jeffery Miron it became increasingly difficult for Mormon missionaries/doctors/materialists seeking religious instruction east of First Street due to increased military activity surrounding the town center making travel more difficult so some relocated westwards instead although some original Mormon settlers did return later on.[8] In 1912 Cheyenne Wagon Wheel Trading Company was founded with capital raised by local ranchers John Smedley & Harry Nichols (later also owners/managers of Desert Inn Resort Casino) originally located just southwest corner Griggs Rd., east side Keystone Rd., south sideFirst St., north side Apache Blvd., within minutes’ walk or bike ride (El Coyote Hotel), adjacent successful livestock auctioneer & cattle drivesenterprise operation begun successfully right away![9][10][11][12] One year later another successful livestock auctioneer business started up nearby – Red Rock Cattle Co.; however this too failed shortlived because one night federal agents raiding East Valley ranch found 10 tons of contraband beef hidden inside red rock cave leading agent Joe Lyle Pinkerton closed down operations immediately! By 1933 both businesses had been closed down evidently because prohibition had made agriculture less profitable than before;[13],[14],[15]} However years later when Prohibition ended things changed again with most major operators moving out into production rather than dealing with enforcement issuesi especially as speakeasy law tightened up even further [16]; finally becoming legalized statewide November 3rd 1920,[17] thus bringing much needed economic opportunityto ElOY during those troubled times although some aspects such as prostitution remained openly tolerated throughout prohibition era until January 1919 when state outlawed liquor sales altogether effective then months earlier.[18]) A variety OF TOURISM EVENTS ARE ANNOUNCED EVERY YEAR INCLUDING CRAFT FESTIVALS MEDAL DAYS CELEBRATED WITH PARTY DOWNLOADABLE FLAMES ORCHIDS etc...the list goes on!
On November 18, 1912, Eloy was founded by ranchers James and Anna Hinks as a cattle ranch. The first crop on the homestead was corn, which continued to be grown until 1915. In 1916, the Hinks built a sawmill and grist mill on the creek that flows through the ranch. They also began raising horses and sheep. In 1917, Eloy became an adobe town when a school was established at the corner of First Street and Main Avenue. That same year, James Hinks died and his wife took over management of the ranch. She continued to operate it until her death in 1931. After she passed away, Anna Hinks continued to run it as a widow until her death in 1938. In 1939, another woman assumed management of the ranch after Mrs. Hinks' death; this woman named Vera Laughlin ran it for about 15 years before its sale in 1955 to Pima County Sheriff Tom Smithson for $5,000 cash ($100 per acre). The current owner is Pima County sheriff's office; however they have not been able to maintain it since 1978 because of bad maintenance ( floods etc.).
