Eloy is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, located on the Eloy River. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. Gourmet coffee first began to be produced in Eloy in the early 1800s. In 1851, Italian immigrants Giovanni and Giuseppe Mantovani started a coffee plantation in what is now the town of Eloy. The Mantovani family continued to produce gourmet coffee until the early 1990s when it was purchased by the Rotella family. The Rotella family has been producing gourmet coffee since 1978 and currently operates three roasters which include: Angelo's Coffee, Decaf Village, and Rare Roasters. The history of gourmet coffee production in Eloy can be traced back to 1851 when Italian immigrants Giovanni and Giuseppe Mantovani started a coffee plantation in what is now the town of Eloy. They named their plantation "Giovanni Mantova" after their father-in-law Giovanni' Grillo who had owned a large farm near Naples where they grew beans for their business. After several years of growing beans, they established themselves as one of Arizona's leading producers of specialty coffees with their "Pineapple Coffee" which became popular among Tucson residents because it was fruity and sweet like pineapple juice (although this recipe actually originated with French press brewers). By 1875, they had acquired another property - this time on Saguaro Creek - that would serve as their primary roasting facility for many years until it burned down in 1912. From then on, allawałański used his other property - also on Saguaro Creek - as his primary roasting facility until he sold it to private developers in 1978 following World War II when most US manufacturing efforts were focused towards war needs such as aircraft production or munitions production instead of traditional agriculture products such as coffee beans. The area now known as Eloy was first inhabited by the Pima and Apache people in the late 1800s. After years of Resistance against efforts by the US government to claim these lands, the Pima and Apache people were finally forced out of their homes in 1868. The area that would become Eloy was then part of what is now southern Arizona. In 1912, it became a part of Mexico after President Porfirio Díaz signed a treaty allowing for Mexican annexation of areas east of the 100th parallel. Because Mexico had not yet completed its own annexation process, this meant that much of southeastern Arizona remained under Spanish rule until 1912. Eloy was first settled by the Chiricahua Apache in 1851. The town was founded on a Rancho Topacio grant, and it was named after General Antonio Armijo, who had fought against Mexican forces in the 1847 California campaign. In 1863, Eloy became part of the newly created Arizona Territory. It remained an unincorporated community until 1912, when it became a city under the name of Phoenix.
