Eloy is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1907 by ranchers George and Anna Ayer. The population of Eloy was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The early settlers were farmers who raised cattle and sheep. In the 1920s, Eloy became an important railroad stop because it served as the junction for two tracks that ran northeast to Phoenix and southwest to Tucson. The townsite had a post office from 1907 until 1912. In 1923, Eloy had its first movie theater when the Apache Movie House opened on Main Street. A second movie house called the Globe opened in 1935 and owned by RKO Radio Pictures until 1951. The Post Office closed in 1912 but remained open as an agricultural store until 1916 when it changed hands multiple times before becoming a grocery store again in 1931 under ownership of Harry Hogg (Rancho Bernardo). Hogg also operated a radio station out of Eloy from 1928 to 1945 called KRQE-AM which played country music programming over AM WDVE-FM which was then owned by Don Rogers Broadcasting Company (later KTAR-TV). The first school in town was built near what is now downtown on Franklin Avenue in 1911; however, it did not open until 1915 due to lack of money being available for construction materials at that time. That same year, there were only 12 students enrolled intown's one grade school; however, enrollment grew rapidly through secondary education after World War I as nearby schools were dedicated to educating soldiers returning home from battle or serving overseas.
