The Gun Owners of America (GOA) is a non-profit organization which defends Second Amendment rights across the country. In 1945, Wally Bozarth donated an automatic weapon to the El Mirage chapter; this was followed by donations from other businesses such as Kmart and Safeway over time until finally being given to GOA on October 3rd 1959 by Mrs. Florence Fowler with instructions to turn it into an "El Mirage Gun Museum." On October 25th 1969 Mr./Mrs./Son Donny presenting arms at dedication ceremony at El Miragegun museum (now part of Arizona State University). El Mirage is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 2,801 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The townsite that now makes up El Mirage was first developed as a cattle ranch by Spanish settlers in the early 1800s. A post office called Nacoochee was established in 1878, and remained in operation until 1912. Nacoochee was located on what is now Mesa Drive east of Broadway Avenue. In 1909, two brothers named George and Harry Parrish bought some of the Rancho San Vicente land north of present-day El Mirage from Mexican ranchers Manuel Amador and Francisco Lopez de la Vega for $1 million dollars. development continued apace with construction of a series of irrigation canals allowing farming to expand into what were then desert areas. Water availability became an issue as well; during the 1920s it was discovered that water could be extracted from underground sources but would only flow if someone drilled through a ridge in order to access it During World War II, many citizens worked on military installations throughout Southern Arizona including El Mirage where aluminum production took place at nearby Alcoa plants (now EnergySolutions).
