El Mirage, Arizona is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Tucson. The population was 2,552 as of the 2010 census. The name means "the Mirage." The community was founded in 1903 by H.C. Dodge and his family. A post office called El Mirage was established in 1907, and remained in operation until 1912. In 1919 the community became part of the newly formed Pima County after it was separated from Apache County. As of the 2000 census, there were 2,827 people living in El Mirage proper and its unincorporated annexes (including those within Phoenix city limits). The economy of El Mirage is based on agriculture and ranching; also livestock production includes haymaking and cattle retailing services. There are two shopping centers: one near Interstate 10 and the other at Loop 202/9th Street NW adjacent to Pima Community College.

El Mirage, Arizona is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town began as a farming community in 1901 and became a ghost town when the railroad bypassed it in 1902. El Mirage was established as an agricultural center by Mormon settlers in 1909. The community's name comes from the Mirage River which runs through it. The first post office opened in El Mirage on November 17, 1909. The last post office closed on September 30, 1950. In 1911, developers bought land near what is now El Mirage and built an agricultural community called "Mormon Settlement". On October 15 of that year, the first school opened for students in the new settlement. By 1912 there were around 100 residents living in Mormon Settlement and 5 businesses had been started including a grocery store, livery stable and millinery shop catering to local farmers and ranchers who grew corn for export to California marketplaces. In 1916 Mormon Settlement was renamed "El Mirage" after its founder's brother-in-law who also named his home "El Mirage". In 1922–23 a group of Mormon settlers petitioned Congress to annex Valentine Valley so that they could establish their own government there instead of having to deal with Apache Nation members who lived there illegally (the petition never received attention). On December 12th 1923 President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 13422 giving legal status to Mormons living east of Interstate 10 (excluding Valentine Valley) as well as forbidding Apache Nation members from raiding these communities without prior permission from U.S authorities; this order effectively ended Apache Wars between various Indian groups within Pinal County . Since 1977 El Mirage has been served by Mesa Verde Unified School District #2 which operates 9 schools including 3 high schools (grades 9-12), 2 middle schools (grades 7-8), 1 elementary school (grades PK-5), one charter school (Marist PreKindergarten through 4th grade) and one special needs program (PreKindergarten through 6th grade). Prior to 1977 Mesa Verde Unified School District #1 operated 8 schools which include 3 high schools (grades 9-12), 2 middle schools (grades 7-8), 1 elementary school (grades PK-5), one charter school(Marist PreKindergarten through 4th grade) and one special needs program(PreKindergarden through 6th grade).
The El Mirage mission of the USAF was to provide strategic airlift for the US government. The airport was built in 1941 by the Army and became an active USAF base in 1945. The airport served as a major bomber, tanker, and reconnaissance center during World War II and afterwards. The El Mirage runway was extended in 1944 to 4,000 feet (1,200 m). During the Vietnam War, the El Mirage AFB became one of several USAF bases used to house American Special Forces troops engaged in operations against North Vietnamese forces. In 1973, all USAF units were transferred to Air Defense Command effective 1 October 1973 pursuant to Nixon's decision that Air Force support for US operations would be centralized under a single command structure. In 1990, after years of decline due to increases in international travel and competition from other airports, El Mirage AFB reopened as a commercial airport with three parallel runways designated 3L/21R (for general aviation), 3L/23R (for military), and 3L/27R (for long-haul passenger service). In 2001 it merged with neighboring Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport becoming one of only two Arizona airports ever combined into one comprehensive airport system.
