By 1600, Dutch traders had started importing Arabica beans from Java and Nigeria and exporting ground coffee to Holland. Today, Dutch-owned businesses still produce high-quality Arabica beans under the name Koffie van Holland (coffee from Holland). In 1795, French traders imported African slaves who grew wild bean trees near Bordeaux; these slaves were then able to graft some of their own genetic traits into the African bean so that they became more resistant to disease than those grown within Africa. As a result of this breeding program, French roasters were able to improve upon traditional European brewing techniques over time so that their products tasted more nuanced and complex than those made elsewhere in Europe. When Portuguese sailors discovered India during Magellan's voyage in 1498 they brought back large quantities of Indian Ceylon tea plants which they studied for several years before shipping back home with some 12 tons of dried leaves per ship!
