Cottonwood, Arizona is a town of about 4,000 people located in the Apache National Forest. The population has increased rapidly in recent years due to the growth of the oil and gas industry. Many citizens find their livelihoods in policing. The first policeman in Cottonwood was John Haltom who arrived in 1885. He was part of a detachment that patrolled the area around Gold Creek Reservoir. At that time, it was difficult for settlers to get close to the reservoir because of the high hillsides and cliffs surrounding it. In 1912, Harry J. Sitton became the first officer on duty at Cottonwood when he replaced George Browning. At that time, there were only two policemen on duty at any one time. However, over time more officers have been added to the force: Art Hill in 1951 and Don Drysdale in 1974. In 1988, Cottonwood also got its own police department which was known as Police Department 1 until 1994 when it changed its name to Cottonwood Police Department 2. Today, Cottonwood Police Department consists of six officers who patrol an area that encompasses 6 square miles including parts of Scotts Valley and Carefree (northwest Mesa).

Cottonwood is a small town in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,711 as of the 2010 census. Cottonwood was founded in 1907 by Will Rogers and J.D. Huffman. The first post office at Cottonwood opened in 1908. Cottonwood has been served by the Pinal County School District since 1912 and by the Apache Junction Unified School District since 1959. The townsite was named for cottonwoods that grew near the site of present-day Cottonwood. A post office called Cottonwood was established in 1907, and remained in operation until it closed in 1969. The community was renamed for Texas congressman James Fenton Cottonney on July 15, 1911; he had been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona two years earlier but had not yet taken up his duties when he received the gift of the town site from WIll Rogers Cottonwood's economy is primarily tourism with a few businesses providing services such as agriculture or construction
Cottonwood was founded in 1886 by George A. Cotton and his brother-in-law, Hiram Bittner. The town was named in honor of General John C. Fremont who had fought in the Mexican War. In 1912, Cottonwood became a city and is still there today.
