The Coolidge Air Force Base, home to the Arizona Air National Guard’s 5th Bomb Wing, has been a significant airbase in the state for over 60 years. The wing was activated on 1 October 1912 as the 9th Pursuit Squadron at Coolidge Field. It was redesignated as the 5th Pursuit Squadron and activated at Fort Huachuca on 15 December 1917 as part of the 2d Aero Squadron. The squadron served with fighter planes until its disbandment on 1 July 1920. The unit re-activated on 30 August 1927 as the 3d Attack Squadron at Coolidge Field under command of Major General Hugh Wickenheiser Jr.. The squadron flew medium bombers before being reassigned to Douglas Aircraft Company’s Phoenix Division in 1938 and becoming one of their original P-38 Lightning squadrons. On 20 May 1941, while stationed at RAF Mildenhall, England, 3ds squadron became operational with Lockheed P-6M aircraft when Lockheed Corporation acquired control of United States War Assets Administration (WAA) assets in that country. In September 1941 3ds squadron became operational with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress aircraft when Boeing Corporation transferred ownership of all its assets including this unit from USAAF hands to USAAF under terms of the surrender agreement following World War II . Inactivated effective 18 February 1945 and reactivated in March 1945 as part of demobilization process for military units which had ceased combat operations after World War II . Redesignated again on 1 October 1946 as Headquarters/5th Bomb Wing (Air Defense) . First manned by USAF officers only after transfer from USAAF to USAF structure effective 9 October 1946 .
